The success of Qantas, which sold 134 tickets on a flight to « nowhere » in 10 minutes, gives wings to other airlines: also, flights to « nowhere » – taking off from one point to return to the same point! – are increasing in Asia-Pacific.
It is now the turn of the South Korean company Asiana Airlines to put on sale two flights to « nowhere » on October 24th and 25th. Lasting nearly two hours, both flights will be operated by Airbus A380. Passengers will take off from Seoul-Incheon Airport, fly over Gangneung and Pohang on the east coast, then Gimhae near the southern port city of Busan and the seaside island of Jeju located in the south of the Korean Peninsula, before returning to the starting point, in Seoul-Incheon.
Fares for « going in circles » on Asiana Airlines range from 205,000 won ($ 175.5) in Economy class to 305,000 won in Business class. On each flight, there will be only 310 seats on offer due to social distancing rules, about 185 less than the number of seats usually available on an A380 super-jumbo, Asiana Airlines. In-flight meals will be served to all passengers, along with an amenity kit. As a bonus, customers will receive 50% discount vouchers for subsequent flights and miles. Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) has sold tickets for a charter flight to « nowhere », while Taiwanese carriers have launched similar campaigns – Starlux Airlines has launched a « pretending to go abroad » trip « ; EVA Airways sold 309 seats on one flight on a special Father’s Day, and Tigerair Taiwan operated a flight with 120 passengers on board. Singapore Airlines has also announced plans to operate passenger flights to « nowhere », combining them with stays in luxury Singapore hotels, vouchers, and limousine rides.
“People are in need of travel. If the demand is there, we will organize more experiments like this while waiting for the borders to open, ”said Qantas, which sold its tickets to“ nowhere ”for between AU $ 566 and $ 2,734. So much for the environment, any recipe is good to take in times of crisis!
